Carlton Carrera Info
All I got when I bought the Carrera from Carlton Automotive Ltd was the Cortina Version build manual you see here on this website, and a few verbal instructions. Now that Carlton no longer support this car, and they don't seem to reply to my letters either(!?), I've put all the information I have on this website.
They originally told me the way they created the shape and panels of the Carrera was to take moulds from a Jag E-Type, cut it down the middle, then widdened it to suit the new running gear. One size fits all apparently! They also said the roof was also a Cortina roof put on backwards!

Parts list (from my memory!) :-
- Front windscreen and side windows from Ford Capri (additional info from Gareth Myles who says "The door glass and winder mechanism for the Carrera is from a Capri Mk III or more. The glass from a Mk II is smaller and the winder mechanism sits at a different angle. I discovered this when I bought Mk II during my own build. The rear side windows are also from the Mk III or more but only the optional opening windows found on very few Capris fit correctly. Non-opening windows use a larger piece of glass that does not fit.") - Thanks Gareth, guess I was lucky!
- Rear window - MGB GT rear window
- Dashboard surround from Ford Capri - although some people have used the Mk4/5 Cortina or Jaguar XJ6
- Rear lights - Opel Manta rear lights - these are swapped sides and fitted upside down.
- Front headlights - standard 7 inch round - e.g. from an old Mini - I bought new Cibie versions
- Front indicators - Ford Escort Mk2 front indicators
- Cortina front end subframe and suspension.
- Capri 3.0 back axle, and propshaft shortened and balanced to suit
- Cortina 2.3V6 engine mounted back and down into the chassis
- Extra steering linkage made with additional UV joint, and unassisted rack tilted back
- New alternator bracket made and mounted where power steering pump used to be (this is because once the engine was mounted back and down into the chassis, the original location for the alternator would foul the cross member and get in the way of the new steering linkage)
- Custom-made thermostat housing (again due to cross member getting in the way)
- Peugot 409 (I think) fanbelt to suit revised alternator layout.
- Peco exhaust system routed down the centre tunnel under the propshaft, but between the floor panels to give road clearance - Flexipipe under the back axle as there was no point going over the axle - Road clearance is a MAJOR problem with these cars, they are VERY low underneath!!
Disc Brake Conversion
